Beyond the Ridge

2024 - 2026

This project comprises two series of works: Welcome Back to the Horizon and Shuishan: Returnings.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum

"Beyond the Ridge" signifies a change in direction, rather than arrival at a summit. After passing through the forest and climbing toward the ridgeline, it marks a shift in thought, a turn toward the horizon and the journey back.

At midnight, one enters the dark forest as if sleepwalking. For some seven years, the artist has continued to climb through the mountains, encountering remote settlements and remnants of the forestry industry, abandoned histories and memories obscured by time and nature. The people and civilizations that have vanished linger in the mountains' liminal spaces, ghosts suspended between existence and disappearance.

The journey begins deep in the mountains. During a mountain traverse, the artist encounters Shuishan, once an important center of camphor production that disappeared from the map as the industry declined. Entering into a renewed dialogue with the settlement's skeletal remains, the artist excavates them and uses bone-conduction devices to make them resonate. Through vibration, the remains become audible and perceptible once more, briefly bringing departed lives into the present and gathering and reassembling sonic memories across different dimensions of time. Objects left behind, embedded in the earth through the slow workings of time, dissolve through moving images to become the landscape's next phase.

The body then turns and begins its descent. Octopus tentacles emerge like grafted limbs from tree trunks, responding to a dream shared across time with those who worked deep in the mountains. Each tentacle carries an independent memory, becoming a metaphor for severing trauma in order to survive. Unfamiliar experiences and dreams seep into these severed memories and take root. Finally, carrying these ghosts and all that cannot be let go, the journey descends the mountain and returns to the horizon.
