This work is co-produced by Lin Yan-Xiang and Tsai Yu-Ting. Taipingshan Forest Station was once a major forestry hub in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. More than a century ago, in order to extract valuable mountain resources, a fully functional settlement and transportation network was established deep in the mountains, complete with a police station, elementary school, and Shinto shrine.
As forest resources were depleted, the settlement was entirely relocated to what is now Mt.Taiping National Forest Recreation Area. The original site gradually disappeared into overgrown wilderness, and it was not until the recent rise of hiking culture that this forgotten history resurfaced in public awareness.
Alongside industrial development came systematic natural history surveys. Benefiting from the forest railway, Mt.Taiping became a gateway for naturalists to enter the mountains, where many species were first collected and named. The work is filmed at the remains of the former Mt.Taiping Shrine's approach path and platform. Insects are symbolically summoned through Insect collecting device, illuminated light placed across the mountain terrain, evoking the presence of various spirits that linger in this place.
